Mahyar caravanserai of Isfahan: a gateway to the history and culture of Iran
Mahyar Caravanserai, a gem of Iranian architecture in the heart of the desert, is not just a historical building, but a gateway to Iran’s history and culture. This caravanserai dates back to the Safavid era and has witnessed many ups and downs over the centuries.
Architecture:
Four lofty porches: four magnificent porches with tiling and moqranskari decorations surround the courtyard of the caravanserai. The southern porch, the tallest and most magnificent porch, is decorated with an inscription made of marble tiles that shows the construction date of the caravanserai in 907 AH.
Dome: The high brick dome of the caravanserai, with its grandeur and splendor, is placed above it. The decoration of the dome with brickwork and moqransbandi has given it a special effect.
Mihrab: The Mihrab of the Caravanserai is a masterpiece of the art of tile work and calligraphy. The mosaic tiles with Slimi motifs and Kufi lines have doubled the beauty and elegance of the altar.
Decorations: mosaic and seven-color tiling, exquisite plasterwork, and fine carvings, on different levels of the caravanserai, have added to its beauty and splendor.
Function:
Caravans Rest: Mahyar Caravanserai was used as a place for caravans and travelers to rest and refresh on the way from Isfahan to Shiraz.
Trade center: In the caravanserai, there was a market for the exchange of goods and products between merchants and travelers.
Safe place: The caravanserai with high walls and guard towers was a safe place for rest and business.
