Description

The Babak Castle, also known as the Babak Fort or Babak Citadel, is one of the most iconic historical landmarks in northwestern Iran. Perched atop the rocky heights of the Qaradagh Mountains near Kaleybar, the fortress is famous for its association with Babak Khorramdin, who led a prolonged resistance against the Abbasid Caliphate in the 9th century.

Historical Background

Babak Castle served as a strategic stronghold for Babak Khorramdin and his followers during the Khorramdin movement, which resisted Abbasid rule in the region for more than two decades. Its remote and elevated location provided natural defense and allowed the rebels to withstand repeated attacks.
