Cocoon embroidery is one of the most beautiful and delicate handicrafts in which silk cocoons are used as the main element to create various designs. Due to its unique elegance and beauty, this art has always attracted attention and is known as one of the valuable handicrafts of Iran.
The history of cocooning
The roots of cocoon embroidery go back to ancient times. At that time, silk cocoons were used as decoration for clothes and precious objects. With the passage of time and the development of sewing techniques, cocoon embroidery became one of the popular arts and reached its peak of prosperity in different historical periods, especially in the Safavid period.
Types of cocoon embroidery
There are different types of cocoon embroidery, each of which is performed with its own technique:
- Embossed cocoon embroidery: In this type of cocoon embroidery, the cocoons are sewn on the fabric in an embossed way to create voluminous and beautiful designs.
- Flat cocoon embroidery: In this type of cocoon embroidery, the cocoons are sewn flat on the fabric to create delicate and uniform designs.

Materials and tools used in cocoon embroidery - Silk cocoons: Silk cocoons are found in natural white, cream and yellow colors and are suitable for cocoon embroidery due to their strength and luster.
- Fabric: Silk, linen and velvet fabrics are among the fabrics used for cocoon embroidery.
- Thread: Silk and cotton threads are used to sew the cocoons to the fabric.
- Needle: Needles for cocooning have a sharp tip and a large eye to easily pass through the cocoons.
- Scissors: used to cut thread and fabric.
- Glue: used to keep the cocoons fixed on the fabric.
Applications of cocoon embroidery - Dress decoration: cocoon embroidery is used to decorate dresses, local dresses and accessories.
- Making art panels: artists create very beautiful art panels using cocoon embroidery techniques.
