Art of Borya Bafi: A legacy of reeds and artist’s hands
Buria weaving is one of the original and ancient handicrafts of Iran, which is rooted in the rich history and culture of our country. This art uses natural reeds and especially reeds to create various products that have had many uses in the past and present.
History of Buria weaving
Borya weaving is as old as human civilization. Evidence shows that from thousands of years ago, humans used reeds and plants to make shelters, mats and other items. In Iran, Boria weaving is especially popular in hot and dry areas and it is used to build mud houses, roof covering, underlay and many other items.
Borya weaving raw materials
The most important raw material for making Borya is straw. Long and resistant straws are harvested from reeds and used for weaving after preparation. In addition to reed, sometimes other plants such as jagen are also used to weave buria.
Buria manufacturing process
Making a Buriya product includes the following steps:

  • Straw harvesting: straws are harvested from the reeds and transferred to a suitable place.
  • Preparation of straws: straws are dried, cleaned and cut into required sizes.
  • Weaving: using simple tools such as fingers, needle and comb, straws are woven together lengthwise and crosswise.
  • Decoration: In some cases, Buriya products are decorated with natural colors or other decorations.
    Boria applications
    Burias have a variety of uses, some of which are:
  • Construction: It is used to cover the roof of mud houses, build walls and partitions.
  • Underlay: It is used as an underlay, carpet and mat.
  • Baskets and buckets: used to store food and various items.
  • Hats and head coverings: In the past, Boria was used to make hats and head coverings.
  • Handicrafts: It is used to make all kinds of handicrafts such as bags, boxes and pendants.
