Ashurade historical castle: a reminder of Russia’s colonial presence in Iran
The historical Ashuradeh Castle, also known as the Castle of the Russians, is a historical monument from the Qajar period, which is located on Ashuradeh Island and near Turkmen Port. This castle was built in 1274 AH by the order of General Kozlov, the military commander of the Russians in the north of Iran.
Architecture:
Ashurade Castle is an example of Qajar period military architecture. This castle has a triangular plan with a base of 60 meters and two legs of 38 meters. There are guard towers at each corner of the building.
Materials: The main materials used to build this castle are bricks and mortar.
Entrance: The entrance of the castle is located on the south side of the building and has an archway and brickwork decorations.
Courtyard: The courtyard of the castle has a wide and open space and in the middle of it, there is a large pond.
Rooms: Around the courtyard of the castle, there are several rooms that were used for the accommodation of Russian soldiers and officers.
Turrets: There are guard turrets in the four corners of the castle, which were used for observation and shooting.
History:
Ashurade Castle has witnessed many events throughout history. In 1298 AH, following the Iranian people’s protest against the Turkmanchai Treaty, Mirza Kochch Khan Jangli attacked this castle and captured it. In 1320 AH, with the occupation of Iran by the Allies, Ashurade Castle was captured by the Soviet Red Army. After the withdrawal of the Soviet Union from Iran, this fort was handed over to the Iranian army.
